I finished up my bag to take with me to Florida. Thought the fabric fit right in. Love to put braided handles on a bag, they stay on your shoulder really well. I've had this fabric for years, another stash buster. Yea!!! A little sun glass holder and small bag to fit inside, I try to stay organized on a trip. I'll be back in a week and maybe a little surprise, you just never know.

"TUTORIAL" Placemat Purse and Rebecka-Thank you so much

First Tutorial from Calamity Jane's Cottage

Supplies needed for lined purse

2 Placemats

Fabric-this may vary due to size of place mats-3/4 yard will get the lining, loop and pockets

Webbing for handles -this also can vary, I like long enough handles to go under my arm. I measured 2-24" of webbing

Optional for closure-large button

Cut your lining the same size as your placmats. I also cut 2 pockets-8"X14" and a loop for closure 2 1/2"X13", all out of lining.

When I make my pockets I fold over pocket fabric to measure 8"X7", see picture below. Sew RST and leave opening at bottom to turn pocket. Trim corners and turn.

Press pocket and pin onto lining; you will catch the bottom of the pocket at this time, which was opened for turning the pocket.

Sew pockets to lining.

Pin RST, front and back of purse, sew sides and bottom. Sew the same for the lining but leave an opening at the bottom of the lining for turning.

Make loop by folding in sides to the center and then folding again to make a piece that will measure about 1/2"X13". This can vary depending on what size you would like. I took a picture of how I fold this to make a loop for the button.

To make box purse bottom, pull seams together and sew across where it would measure 3" across. Most of the time you would cut out a small amount, but on some placemats it would come unraveled. So I skipped that step.

Turn bag right sides out and pin handles and loop to purse. Loop is put in the center and the handles are put 4" from the side

Slip bag into lining RST.

Pin around top and sew the top edge.

Turn purse through opening in bottom of lining and sew the opening closed.

Pin around the top edge and make sure the handles and loop are not in the way when you sew this step. Since we are working with placemats in the project, this can be a little thick.

I also put a little pleat at the side of the purse after it is all finished. You have to sew down a little from the top due to thickness here. Add a big button and you are ready to go.

"Thank you so much"-Peg @ http://happyinquilting.blogspot.com/ sent me a package I wasn't expecting at all. I tell you, quilter's have the biggest hearts. Peg, this was so thoughtful, you didn't need to (but oh it was so exciting). I'm posting before I email you, that it came today. Look what all she sent just because I sent something for the challenge she had. She wrapped a magazine Australian Quilters Companion, an address book with the most beautiful pictures of quilts and wall hangings in it, a Kit-Kat bar (yum) and a beautiful card all wrapped up in a fat quarter and tied with a bow. I have seen a project in the book I want to try and the address book is going to have all the new quilters I have met online in it. Thank you again, Peg.

Now I have to tell you about a little man, Mr. Baxter, who came and stayed with me while my DH was working so hard.

Isn't he the cutest thing, when I shake my foot he will start playing and running, see he's getting ready... This is my daughter's dog and since they went out of town he stayed with me. It's so good to have a man around the house.

I was going to show pictures of the purse I made for the purse swap and thought I can't do that now because she doesn't know who I am and I put her initials on the bag. So I guess you will have to wait until she gets it before I can show any pictures. There is only one view I can show and it is the back view. The bag is large enough for her quilting project and full of pockets so she can put all her sewing items in it when she needs to grab it and go. I'll take pictures of the other items I'm sending her tomorrow. So here's a peek:

I hope everyone stays safe and has a great Labor Day! We are watching the weather here and buckling down the hatchet in case the hurricane comes this way. After going through hurricane Rita, you really take these things serious.

I've had a few emails saying they couldn't find the purse online so I got the pictures taken and they are loaded. It has rained so much here, the pictures are just coming out foggy. Getting Ready For Fall

I'm late posting this because I got the great idea of making two, one to giveaway and one for the shop, www.calamityjanescottage.com . I might take better pictures tomorrow and post them. It has been raining here and the pictures came out a little foggy.

I love different purses for the season. This pattern is from Indygo Junction-The Crestwood and it turned out larger than I expected. There are two pockets on the inside and I used denim in the inside to give it some body. It has a pin on it for closure and I scrunched the fabric on the handles. I have the pattern if you are interested.

I will put your name in twice if you leave me a post and post about it on your blog. Deadline for entries will be August 28th and I will announce the winner before Labor Day weekend.

Just Before The Storm!!!

Today was a hot steamy day. I stayed outside and watched as the cement got poured for our workshop. Have you ever seen a cement truck with a neck like this. I wish my neck was long and skinny.... Oh well, back to the story. These young men worked really hard in this hot weather.


Do you see the guy closest to us with the belt on, he was working the truck from that control, amazing. I remember when my Dad and others would pull that concrete all over the place, you talk about a work out. Here are a few more pictures.

TaDah!!! Here it is all finished. What a mess in the yard... Why do buildings look so small with just the slab? It's going to be 30X50 building with a 20' covered front area. I'm so glad they got this poured today, because we are in the path for the tropical storm out in the Gulf.

Part 2

Now I thought I would show you a purse I had done, which I call it my mistake bag. When I taught sewing in my shop a lady had cut all her strips to small. A measurement that wasn't in the quilt pattern. So when she got to the class, she just threw them in the garbage. OH MY, I grabed them up and told her she could use them in another project and she said no they are just to small 1 1/2" strips. She insisted she did not want them and bought more fabric.

I wish I had taken a picture of the bag I made her out of the strips. I had it all made when she came to the next class and she decided then, you can use all your fabric for something.

This bag spread like hot cakes and everyone wanted to do them, so I started doing classes making them. I have pictures of my bag, I tried to put each persons personality in each bag I would make if they purchased them. Anyway, thought this would give you some inspiration.

Can you tell mine is so full with quilting and magazines it's about ready to bust. It has pockets all inside and a long straps for handles.

Another UFO Finished!

I just love the three cowboy's in this picture.

I put a tag I made out of faux leather on this side that reads "Cowboy Butts Make Me Nuts", I saw this on a tee shirt and thought it fit this picture, but it is removable.

The handles, I took three fabric strips and raveled the edges. I then braided them to make a sturdy handle. Antique Button for closure and plenty of pockets inside. I will be listing this on my online shop.

Now back to the machine, it makes me feel so good to finish something.
